Descender, Descending; A river which flows from the Sea of Galilee south, about 223 miles from Mount Hermon into the Sea of Galilee to the Salt Sea (Genesis 13:10). It is a shallow, easily crossable. The river's name in Hebrew is Yarden, and it is derived from yarad. It is divided into an upper and lower course. The upper section begins in the mountains in the North and sinks 47-miles to Lake Hula. It then drops very steeply for 16 miles to the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. It drops over 3,100 feet, with the lowest elevation of any river in the world, almost 1,400 feet below sea level. (See Jordan River)
