Abel I From Hevel-Vapor, Vanity, Breath; Shows the brevity of the human life (PS 39:5); 2nd son of Adam and Eve, murdered by his brother, Cain; Type of Spiritual Israel, the Wheat Class
Abel II Applies to place names; Stream; A Hebrew letter is different in the spelling between Abel I and Abel II;Usually part of a compound name; The town called Abel occurs first in 1 Samuel 6:18, although most scholars agree that this is probably a text error and should read ('eben), meaning stone. Then there is a town named Abel in 2 Samuel 20:14 and 20:18, but in 20:15 the text speaks of Abel-beth-maacah. So either Abel and Abel-beth-maacah are adjacent and similarly named towns (like, say, Beverly and Beverly Farms in Massachusetts) or they are the same town known by a long, complete and a short, truncated name.

G-d promised this land to Abram's descendants. Abram is referred to as a Hebrew, perhaps because he is descended from Eber or because he came from the "other side" (Eber) of the Euphrates River. He had no children and was old as was his wife, Sarai. She offered her maidservant, Hagar, as a wife to Abram, a common practice in the region. According to Jewish tradition, Hagar was a daughter of Pharaoh, given to Abram during his travels in Egypt. She bore Abram a son, Ishmael, the ancestor of the Arabs. (Gen 16) When Abram was 100 and Sarai 90, Jehovah changed Abram's name to Abraham (father of many), and Sarai's to Sarah (from "my princess" to "princess"). Sarah bore Abraham a son, Isaac, laughter. (Gen 17-18). Isaacwas the ancestor of the Jewish people.

(According to Jewish Tradition: "Abram tried to convince his father, Terach, of the folly of idol worship. One day, when Abram was left alone to mind the store, he took a hammer and smashed all of the idols except the largest one. He placed the hammer in the hand of the largest idol. When his father returned and asked what happened, Abram said, "The idols got into a fight, and the big one smashed all the other ones." His father said, "Don't be ridiculous.
